Polyurethanes

Polyurethanes are a versatile class of polymers that can be customized to suit a wide range of applications. They are formed by the reaction of diisocyanates with polyols, and can be engineered to have a variety of properties such as flexibility, strength, and resistance to heat, hydrolysis and chemicals.
Polyurethanes can be found in numerous industries including construction, automotive, furniture, packaging, and footwear. There are many uses for polyurethanes, such as in flexible foam, rigid foam, coatings, adhesives and sealants, and elastomers.

Will & Co provides companies in the polyurethane industry with essential building blocks in polyurethane formulations. We exclusively co-operate with long-term suppliers with whom we have built a strong relationship. Through this, we ensure stability in quality and support during the whole process: from orientation to delivery.

Catalysts

Catalysts play a critical role in the polyurethanes business as they are used to accelerate the chemical reaction between the diisocyanate and polyol components, which results in the formation of the polyurethane polymer. Catalysts are essential in the production of both rigid and flexible polyurethane foams.
There are two main types of catalysts used in the polyurethanes business: amine catalysts and metal catalysts. Amine catalysts are typically used in the production of flexible foam and elastomers, while metal catalysts are used in the production of rigid foam.

Polyether Polyols

Polyether polyols are a key component in the production of polyurethane products, particularly in the flexible foam and elastomer segments of the polyurethane business. These resins are formulated by the reaction of a polyol with an alkylene oxide, and are characterized by their excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and oxidation.
Polyether polyols are valued for their flexibility and durability, and are used in a variety of applications such as bedding, furniture, automotive seating, and footwear. They are also used as a raw material for the production of adhesives and coatings.

Polyester Polyols

Polyester polyols are commonly used in the polyurethanes business as a raw material for the production of various types of polyurethane products. These resins are typically formulated by the reaction of a polyol with a polyfunctional carboxylic acid or anhydride, and are characterized by their excellent mechanical and thermal properties. Polyester polyols are often used as the base-resin for casting and laminating applications in the polyurethanes industry. They are also used as a binder in the manufacture of various types of rigid and flexible polyurethane foams.

Chain Extenders

As a key building block, 1,4-BDO reacts with isocyanate groups in the polyurethane formulation to form urethane linkages, extending the polymer chains and creating a three-dimensional network structure. As such, it offers improved mechanical properties such as enhanced flexibility, toughness and overall mechanical strength. Enhanced thermal stability, making the material better suited for applications where exposure to temperature variations is expected and increased durability and resistance to environmental factors.
